The Basic English Program is comprised of verbal (listening and speaking) and structure (practical grammar and writing) sections. In the basic levels of the verbal section, listening and speaking skills are introduced through the use of dialogues, pictures, or pantomime. Students learn basic phrases in order to deal with common situations and topics in an English-speaking environment. In the intermediate levels of the verbal section, communication beyond everyday English is emphasized as students move on to more complex language skills.

Class materials focus on current events and topics to practice newly learned language functions. In the advanced levels of the verbal section, the focus is on both informal speaking and formal presentation skills related to public speaking and everyday communication in the English-speaking world. Students will be fine-tuning their oral communication skills to enhance both the accuracy and fluency of their English language abilities.

Intensive English Program (IEP) = Basic English Program (BEP) + CMAR class

Students will learn everyday communication skills and practice American English pronunciation in order to speak with confidence, clarity and effectiveness. The CMAR class focuses on teaching students how to recognize and reproduce American English sounds. The teacher instructs students on the physical structure of the mouth and how to use one's tongue, lips and teeth to speak clear, comprehensible English.

The TOEFL ( iBT ) Preparation Program prepares students for all four sections of the TOEFL (iBT) exam

The program provides effective test strategies for all of the questions on the reading and listening sections of the exam. Students also practice how to read quickly and effectively, and they learn how to take notes efficiently to succeed on the listening section. All six speaking tasks are practiced extensively in class and recorded. The instructor listens to student speaking samples and provides advice for improving word choice, speaking style, and organizational structure.

Unlike programs offered at other schools, students practice writing for the exam by doing one essay per week in class, and they receive scores and comments from the instructor. The instructor corrects and marks essays for misspellings, grammar mistakes, and organization to accelerate progress in writing by the instructor to assist them in their development.

In order to fully prepare students for the conditions and pressure of the examination, students receive partial reading and listening practice tests every Friday, and receive a full practice test in week five and week eleven of the program. Practice tests are reviewed and scored in class. Full practice tests are scored by the instructor with comments and suggestions.

Intensive TOEFL Program (ITP) = Basic TOEFL Program (BTP) + TIP class

This program is designed for students who want to succeed on the TOEFL examination as quickly as possible. STIP combines our 3.6 hour TOEFL Preparation Program with our 1 hour TOEFL Intensive Practice Program (TIP).

The intensive iBT TOEFL class prepares students for the iBT by presenting and practicing strategies to help them improve their reading, vocabulary, listening, speaking and writing skills. In addition, students are given practice in critical thinking and note taking skills. This class is beneficial for students who need a TOEFL score to get into a university or graduate school program and students who need a TOEFL score to enter a profession in the US (such as nursing or pharmacy).

Skills taught include reading, listening, notetaking and writing. Students are given a topic that simulates actual TOEFL topics to write on in each class session.

The students read a topic, listen to a corresponding lecture and then write a short composition that synthesizes or contrasts the reading and the listening. The writing is timed in accordance with conditions on the TOEFL iBT test. The writing is reviewed in class for immediate feedback. Strategies are presented to improve listening and note-taking skills, as well as writing skills.

The Business English course consists of three classes: Business Communication, Business Theory and Meeting, and Business Practical. This course will prepare you for all aspects of the business world, from presentations to PowerPoint, negotiating to socializing, and phone skills to letter-writing. The class also focuses on learning English idioms, vocabulary and slang involved with modern business as well as promoting a real-world application of this knowledge through a variety of activities. Highly interactive, the class encourages students to contribute their experiences from their home countries and reanalyze them within a global context. The class may take several field trips throughout the term to visit local businesses in Beverly Hills

TOEIC Preparation Program

The purpose of the TOEIC class is to help students to pass the TOEIC test. In addition, the class helps students be more successful in the actual business enviornment by building up their business vocabulary and comprehension of the business enviornment.

The class is mose useful for:

Students who wish to work in business in an English speaking country

Students who wish to learn business related vocabulary


Students should be prepared for:

Instensive vocabulary building: The class uses a textbook that contains vocabulary that most commonly appears on the TOEIC test. Up to an hour a day is spent on learning new owrds, understanding and practicing them in context, and reviewing word forms. In addition, words are often pulled from the practice tests for review. Through these two approaches, students are introduced to vocabulary from both American and British English. Many students who take the TOEIC class also take MLI's Business English class offered on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 2:45-5:45 pm

The Business English plus TOELC program includes both the Business English course and the TOEIC course together. The program helps students achieve more success in an actual business environment by building up their business vocabulary and comprehension of the business environment. The GMAT/GRE Preparation Program was designed specifically to help non-native speakers of English improve their verbal, reading, and writing scores on either the GMAT or GRE test. Students receive individualized instruction on the test that they are preparing for, as well as group instruction to improve overall comprehension. This class will cover strategies and review the verbal portions of both tests.

The Conversation Management and Accent Reduction Class (CMAR) is a comprehensive pronunciation course covering all the major consonant and vowel sounds in the English language. The class is structured to allow for group practice but also for guided one-on-one assistance from the teacher. In addition to guided pronunciation practice, listening components ensure that the students can aurally recognize the sounds which they are being asked to replicate. The textbooks are rotated so that students may take the class for several terms without repeating the same material.

The TOEFL Intensive Practice class focuses exclusively on speaking and writing practice.

Students practice speaking six times per week. The goal is to become comfortable with the speaking section of the exam as quickly as possible. The instructor listens to student speaking samples and provides advice for improving word choice, speaking style, and organizational structure.

The English Study + Work Abroad Program is a plan which enables students to work at a nonprofit organization (NPO) as volunteers.

There are many types of NPOs, including international, environmental, and educational groups. There are also animal preservation, welfare, community, and arts & entertainment - related organizations as well as opportunities to work in hospitals or other health-related institutions. The specific duties for each depends on the NPO group's request. Basic responsibilities will be office work such as answering telephones, typing documents, data input, filing, and receptionist - related tasks.

It is also possible to VOLUNTEER while attending English classes at a language school. It is crucial to have English skills in order to communicate with other people in an American company.

Therefore, we recommend that you participate in this program with the language school.
